Need Statement There is a need for a wheelchair propulsion hand tracking system to classify and monitor upper extremity movement patterns of MWUs, which may lead to the development of evidence-based protocols to increase adherence to clinical guidelines for propulsion biomechanics.
Project Scope We propose to deliver a small, user-friendly system to allow the clinician to monitor upper extremity movement patterns when the patient is away from the clinic in order to encourage safer and more efficient propulsion biomechanics. A software interface will differentiate and inform the clinician and patient of the quality of movement. This may encourage retention of proper biomechanics when the patient is at home and in the community. An inexpensive system prototype will be delivered to the client by the end of April, 2017.
